Hearts
The hearts represent the inter-connectivity of things. Each heart appears to be linked, the actions of one directly affecting the next - ‘what goes around comes around’. While the message is a simple and obvious one, it is still relevant. The arteries also resemble tentacles, making each heart have parasitic quality, each one taking from the other.
Originally I conceived the idea shortly after graduating form art school and had planned to model and cast the piece through traditional methods. Ten years later I discovered the drawing and while my methods had changed the message had not, also the form the sculpture would take still intrigued me.
The hearts where scanned in 3D, from an educational anatomy model, then remodelled and duplicated using 3D software where the arteries and final details where added. The physical work was later produced through the use of additive manufacturer, a process that is similar to the idea of growing an object.
